Virtual lab: The lock exchange

Virtual laboratory assignment for OE 753/853, Ocean Hydrodynamics at UNH. This lab is based off an exercise from CEE 262A, Hydrodynamics at Stanford University. Please feel free to implement and adapt for your course. Latex file for the assignment is available on request.

Supplies needed to do this lab on your own:

  • Glass or acrylic tank (I used this small glass vase from Amazon)

  • 1-2 cups salt (canning/pickling salt, such as this)

  • Food coloring (such as this)

  • Plastic sheet cut to fit the cross-section of the tank, to use as a lock

  • Measuring cups/utensils

  • For virtual labs: Timer/stopwatch, ruler, camera, etc.
